Technology Update

As part of the Innovation Generation education and workforce initiative, Grandview Heights students, along with students from several central Ohio school districts, will soon be using sophisticated machinery, building robots, and designing computer programs in their newly acquired MIT Mobile Fab Labs. The Fab Labs are designed to expose students to state-of-the-art technologies and real work situations in advanced manufacturing and robotics.

Innovation Generation was financed exclusively by a $14.4 million grant from the Ohio Straight A Fund, which was established last year by the Ohio General Assembly at the urging of Governor John Kasich. Statewide the fund made $250 million dollars available in first round financing for innovation in classrooms across Ohio. Grandview Heights City Schools is a part of this grant and consortium and therefore will be receiving a Fab Lab. This is exclusively paid for from funds associated with the Straight A Fund, which Grandview Heights City Schools is a member. Innovation Generation extends to 15 central Ohio school districts and focuses on long-term pathways between schools and careers in information technology, health care, advanced manufacturing/robotics, and business logistics. This unprecedented collaboration allows students to earn the credentials needed to fill some of central Ohio’s fastest-growing jobs while getting a significant head start toward earning college degrees while still in high school. Innovation Generation is supported by Columbus State Community College, the Educational Services Center of Central Ohio, Battelle for Kids, Columbus 2020, and a host of community and business partners throughout Ohio to expand postsecondary options for students and close workforce talent gaps that exist across the region in key industry sectors.

On September 9th at 9:30 a.m., Grandview Heights City School District, along with several other school districts, will unveil their Fab Labs during a press event at Pickerington North High School located at 7800 Refugee Road. Other participating districts include Columbus City Schools, Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools, Marysville Exempted Village Schools, New Albany-Plain Local Schools, Pickerington Local Schools, Reynoldsburg City Schools, Westerville City Schools, and Upper Arlington City Schools.
