On Thursday, March 7, 2019, the young rock/metal band “Pray for Sleep” will bring their musical talents and message of “We Are Not Alone” to Grandview Heights High School to raise awareness of mental health conditions and bring the message to those who need it most. The assembly will target 6th through 12th grade students.
Pray for Sleep is a rock/metal band from Columbus that includes Hayden Kissler, Reno Houston, Tyler Kuhner, Ethan Carlson and Grant DeCrane.
A group of Grandview Heights High School student leaders including Shea McHugh, Luke Berlin, Addi Holcomb, Jenna Richards and school counselor, Bryan Stork, worked with the band to make this program and performance one to remember.
“We realized that mental and behavioral conditions exist at Grandview Heights, just like at other schools in the area. The Scream Back program is different than normal assemblies because it’s not adults talking to us, but our peers leading the discussion. We hope it makes a big impact and helps kids that need it,” says Berlin, one of the Grandview Heights High School students participating in the planning.
The band believes combining their love for music with their passion for mental health awareness will bring a unique show and beneficial message to the students. “We always want to bring a positive message in a memorable way and we are excited for this opportunity to do both for the students at Grandview Heights”, says Grant DeCrane, lead vocalist for the band.
Pray for Sleep partnered with Nationwide Children’s Hospital this past fall, helping them launch #OnOurSleeves campaign on World Mental Health Day and raised over $1000 in donations for the cause from ticket sales from the band’s first headlining show. Nationwide Children’s Hospital is providing support to the March 7 Scream Back music program as well with materials from its #OnOurSleeves campaign. According to Nationwide Children’s Hospital OnOurSleeves.org campaign, 1 in 5 kids is living with a mental illness and fifty percent of all lifetime mental illnesses start by age 14.
