Hola! to New Program

Beginning Fall 2014, Grandview Heights City Schools is implementing a new foreign language program at Stevenson Elementary School for students in kindergarten through third grade. We are excited to welcome teacher Emily Deprez to our Grandview Heights family. Mrs. Deprez, an experienced teacher with an extensive curriculum development background, will be teaching students in grades K-3 as well as developing curriculum for Grandview’s Elementary Spanish program.

Foreign language is a new adventure for all K-3 students. They will spend the first year transitioning into Spanish by building a solid foundation in vocabulary and basic language skills. Kindergarteners will have Spanish class once a week for 50 minutes. Children in grades 1-3 will meet twice a week for 30 minutes. Students will cover units throughout the year including Greetings and Introductions, Colors and Shapes, Numbers, Weather and Seasons, and Body Parts.

From a curriculum perspective, this school year will be devoted to creating a K-5 curriculum that will start students on a successful path in their Spanish language development. Research will be done on current methodology and best practices and the curriculum will be aligned to Ohio’s new World Language Standards. Vertical alignment will also be important, as the ultimate goal is to create a successful K-12 program where elementary students achieve proficiency in basic vocabulary and language skills in order to be more successful at the middle and high school levels.
