Hands On Learning

Stevenson Elementary School second graders visited Darby Creek to support their study of life science. As part of a learning experience focused on stream quality monitoring, students used nets called seines to capture macro invertebrates that live in the creek. Students made determinations about the health of Darby Creek as a clean body of water by identifying and counting the animals they captured and analyzing the pollution-tolerance of the creatures.

Prior to their trek into the wild, students engaged in online instructional activities on itsLearning that were designed by their teachers. These lessons were created to prepare students for the trip by providing them with knowledge they would need in the field. This allowed teachers and students to devote valuable time to hands-on learning while on site at Darby Creek.
