Lending a Hand

On May 18, 2018, Grandview Heights Schools, plus 90 parent and community volunteers, participated in an amazing community-wide, project-based learning experience!

After two large, school-wide assemblies at Stevenson Elementary and Grandview Heights High School, students, kindergarten through twelfth grade, worked in teams to assemble a prosthetic limb (arm and hand) to be given to a child who has lost their limb due to landmine explosions, birth conditions, and/or accidents. In two and half hours, our district assembled approximately 260 limbs.  The recipients of these devices span the entire country and globe.  Our district’s recipient schools are located in La Ceiba and Atlantida, Honduras, and we are looking forward to creating a relationship with these students.

“A very earnest thanks to each of you for making today's experience so rich and meaningful to our students. It was inspiring to watch the students exceed our expectations and make an impact in their own way,” said Dr. Jamie Lusher, Chief Academic Officer and the organizer of today’s event.

“We would also like to thank the Grandview Heights/Marble Cliff Education Foundation for their support of this community-wide learning experience.”

Students and volunteers had the opportunity to learn about their recipient, create a video message for their recipient, and design a personalized case to house the device they construct. We believe that this experience offers an authentic learning opportunity for all students. Further, it is an integration and meaningful incorporation of empathy, perseverance, community, science, and engineering.

Grandview Heights Schools has a storied history of supporting community outreach, education, humility, and "a service above self" philosophy. This project offered an opportunity for the schools and community to come together to improve the life of a child.

"I would like to thank you (students, staff, parents, and community members) for making the Hands of Gratitude possible. Truly, without you help, this amazing experience would not have happened. The entire district was engaged and our students had such purpose and meaning in their learning," added Lusher.

The district is in the process of gathering photos of the event. If you have any that you would like to share, please email [email protected], subject line: GRATITUDE.
