GRANDVIEW HEIGHTS 7TH ANNUAL HALLOWEEN WRITING CONTEST OCTOBER 2021

Contest Rules, Story Prompt, and Entry Form Attached

For this writing contest, we invite students to sharpen your pencils and your imaginations as you prepare to “finish the story” that has been started for you.

Some story elements have been added: characters, a simple setting, a bit of suspense. But remember that a good scary story is more than monsters jumping out of a dark corner. You can add to the characters and setting, of course. However, we ask that you avoid blood and gore-nothing violent or yucky needed here.

Remember that a good story has both a protagonist and an antagonist (Good Character vs. Bad Character). The “baddie” causes the problem for the main character, whom readers usually care about the most. The “evil” character gives the story the needed conflict, or problem.

A suspenseful plot will keep readers biting their nails and anxiously turning the page to find out what happens. Lots of twists, turns, and frights along the way will lead readers to an exciting conclusion.

Your story should pick up where the story starter stops. You will either write on notebook paper or print out a copy of your story ending from a computer. The length should be no less than one page and no more than 4. If you love to draw, add an illustration with your contest entry.

There will be one winning story selected from each category: Grades K-1 Grades 2-3 Grades 4-5 Grades 6-8 High School

Your story ending and entry form are due to Mrs. Grundey at LMS by Monday, October 25. You may send your story and form through interschool mail or attach it in an email to: [email protected].  Winning stories will appear on the GH district website on October 29 - just in time for Halloween.  Have a ghoulish good time writing!
