Volunteer Opportunity

Grandview Heights Schools and the Grandview Heights/Marble Cliff Education Foundation are proud to announce that on May 18, 2018, our entire school district will be participating in a community-wide, project-based learning experience!

Our students, kindergarten through twelfth grade, will work in teams to assemble a prosthetic limb (arm & hand) to be given to a child who has lost their limb due to landmine explosions, birth conditions, and/or accidents. The recipients of the devices that we will build span our entire country and globe.

Our students will have the opportunity to learn about their recipient, create a video message for their recipient, and design a personalized case to house the device they construct. We believe that this experience offers an authentic learning opportunity for all students. Further, it is an integration and meaningful incorporation of empathy, perseverance, community, science, and engineering.

Grandview Heights Schools has a storied history of supporting community outreach, education, humility, and "a service above self" philosophy. This project offers an opportunity for the schools and community to come together to improve the life of a child. Won't you consider being a part of this experience? We need your help! We need volunteers to help our teams of students complete their project and build their device. You do not need to be an engineer to volunteer! If you have a heart for kids and can help them follow directions, then you are the perfect volunteer! The entire challenge should take about 2 hours and a half hours.

All volunteers must be background checked.  The online process is located on our district website and only takes a few minutes to complete.  If you are not a volunteer with our district, please go to www.ghcsd.org and click "Become a Volunteer" under the District tab.

Just a reminder that there will be a volunteer training for the Hands of Gratitude on May 3, at 3:10 p.m. in the Edison Intermediate/Larson Middle School John Glenn Commons area. This session should be very helpful and answer many of questions about the assembly of the devices.  If a volunteer cannot attend, please familiarize yourself with the directions for assembly. Here is the link with videos and instructions embedded https://www.hands-of-gratitude.com/hands-of-gratitude-corporate-giveba  .  A hard copy of the directions are also attached and available for download.

Again, the date is Friday, May 18. Volunteer time slots are the following: 8:15 - 11:00 a.m. (K-3rd) and 9:15 - 11:45 a.m. (4th-12th). Additionally, we will be hosting a volunteer training for any volunteer/staff member to have hands-on opportunity to assemble the device. This training is tentatively scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on May 3 in the Edison Intermediate/Larson Middle Schools Commons. We will confirm this date and time with volunteers as we finalize our numbers.

Thank you for your consideration and we hope that you will join us in this powerful, learning opportunity!  To volunteer, please click the link:  http://link.ghcsd.org/hands
